An Interview with Juan Fontana, Contractor & Certified Tarion Warranty Builder.

Juan Fontana specializes in residential, commercial renovations and home building. He has been featured in HGTV Shows such as Income Property and Back Yard Builds and was National Home Show's lead contractor.

Q: How did you come up with the name for Normar Construction?

Normar is combination of the first three letters of my father and mother’s names, Norberto and Margarita.

They are the reason I am who I am today and it just feels right to use their names for inspiration.

Q: How long you’ve been a contractor?

Over 20 years, but my interest and pursuit in construction started when I was small. I used to have a tiny tool belt that I used as I “helped” my father to build, fix and expand our house. What ever project he was doing, I was there too. He has been an inspiration and sounding board as I have grown my business.

Q: What has been the most profound learning experience for you in the 20 years that you have been a contractor?

Patience and perseverance because no matter the home we are working on, there is always surprises.

Q: How do you help renovators deal with these challenges?

We lean in and discuss what the issue is, what makes it a challenge and together we collaborate on a solution. Often this brings us to discussing the goals of the project, why we are doing the renovation and how it will be worth it all in the end.

Q: If you had one word that you would use to describe yourself, what would it be?

Grit.

We didn’t undergo a major renovation but we did need our kitchen redone. Juan talked through our ideas and aesthetics that we were looking for, gave us tips on how to keep it flowing with the rest of the house, and then we threw him a curveball. We asked if we could actually move it to the opposite wall of the house and he got right into measuring, looking at the structure, and went into the basement to look from below how it could be done. Right then is when I knew we would love working with him. We ended up with our dream kitchen, on the opposite wall. We have so much space, and the flow is better. - Shirley, Max, Adele and Hannah

I think one of the hardest parts of a renovation is just getting there and being comfortable with your contractor. You hear so many horror stories these days since it seems like everyone is renovating these days. Not once did we rethink our decision to work with Juan. With the kids we knew we wanted someone who was good at what they do and had worked with other families in renovating their home. We had friends that had horrible experiences with a few contractors and are still trying to finish long after we were done.
